The Yale Grammatical Diversity Project explains why I’ve heard “needs washed” more in the past five years than in the forty-five before them.

The construction is need — or want, or like — followed straight by a passive participle. “The car needs washed.” “This needs replaced.” No to be, no -ing, nothing in between. Its home is the Midlands: Ohio, Indiana and western Pennsylvania at the core, thinning out through Illinois, Missouri, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. YGDP traces it to Scotland and Northern Ireland, carried over by Scots-Irish settlers and held in place by nothing more than inertia ever since.
